Eclipse Prayer: Salat al Kusuf

lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind the earth so that the earth blocks the sun's rays from striking the moon.

This month, a lunar eclipse will take place on Monday, December 20. As a sunnah and common practice of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh), it is recommend you participate in performing Salat al Kusuf.

Ruling: Most of the people of knowledge ('ulama) regard it as an important sunnah (mu'akkadah); Imam Abu Hanifah said it was obligatory (wajib), whilst Imam Malik regarded it as equal to Salat al-Jumu'ah (Friday Prayer) in importance.

The Judgement

[author unknown]

There was an old man in a village, very poor, but even kings were jealous of him because he had a beautiful white horse. Kings offered fabulous prizes for the horse, but the man would say,
"This horse is not a horse to me, he is a person. And how can you sell a person, a friend?"
The man was poor, but he never sold the horse. One morning he found that the horse was not in the stable. The whole village gathered and said,
"You foolish old man! We knew that someday the horse would be stolen. It would have been better to sell it. What a misfortune!"
The old man said, "Don't go so far as to say that. Simply say that the horse is not in the stable. This is the fact; everything else is judgement. Whether it is a misfortune or a blessing I don't know, because this is just a fragment. Who knows what is going to follow it?"

People laughed at the old man. They had always known he was a little crazy. But after fifteen days, suddenly one night the horse returned. He had not been stolen, he had escaped into the wild. And not only that he had brought a dozen wild horses with him.
Again the people gathered and they said, "Old man, you were right. This was not a misfortune, it has indeed proved to be a blessing."
The old man said, "Again you are going too far. Just say that the horse is back...who knows whether it is a blessing or not?" It is only a fragment. You read a single word in a sentence - how can you judge the whole book?"

This time the people could not say much, but inside they knew that he was wrong. Twelve beautiful horses had come.
The old man had an only son who started to train the horses. Just a week later he fell from a horse and his legs were broken. The people gathered again and again they judged.
They said, " Again you proved right! It was a misfortune. your only son has lost the use of his legs, and in your old age he was your only support. Now you are poorer than ever."
The old man said, "You are obsessed with judgement. Don't go that far. Say only that my son had broken his legs. Life comes in fragments and more is never given to you."

It happened that after a few weeks the country went to war, and all the young men of the town were forcibly taken for the military. Only the old man's son was left because he was crippled. The whole town was crying and weeping, because it was a losing fight and they knew that most of the young people would never come back.
They came to the old man and they said, " You were right, old man - this has proved a blessing. maybe your son is crippled, but he is still with you. Our sons are gone forever."
The old man said again, " You go on and on judging. Nobody knows! Only say this, that your sons have been forced to enter the army and my son has not been forced. But only God, the total, knows whether it is a blessing or a misfortune."

Judge not, otherwise you will never become one with the total. With fragments you will be obsessed, with small things you will jump to conclusions. Once you judge you have stopped growing.
Judgement means a stale state of mind. And mind always wants judgement, because to be in a process is always hazardous and uncomfortable.

In fact the journey never ends. One path ends, another begins: one door closes, another opens. You reach a peak; a higher peak is always there. Only those who are so courageous that they don't bother about the goal but are content with the journey, content to just live in the moment and grow into it, only those are able to walk in the total.

Three White Days for Muharram

Assalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,

InshaAllah the three white days (13, 14, and 15) for the month of Muharram will be from this Sunday, December 19th - Tuesday, December 21st.

The Prophet (S) said, "The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the prayer at night." [Muslim]. Therefore, in addition to fasting the three white days, try and fast as many other days as you can :)

Jareer ibn ‘Abdullaah (rAa) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Fasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime, and ayaam al-beed are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth." [Al-Nasaa'i; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheel al-Targheeb]

Qatada ibn Milhan said, "The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to command us to fast the white days: the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth." [Abu Dawud]

Ibn 'Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) did not fail to fast the white days either when at home or on a journey." [an-Nasa'i]

*****There is a yahoo group titled 'ThreeWhiteDays' that will send email reminders of when these days will be observed for each month.

Assalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,

InshaAllah the three white days (13, 14, and 15) for the month of Thul Hijjah will be from this Friday, November 19th - Sunday, November 21st.

Note: Since the 13th of Thul Hijja is still within the days of "Ayyaam Al-Tashreeq", the Scholars have said that fasting it is forbidden. The Prophet (S) said about these days that, "The days of Al-Tashreeq are days of eating, drinking, and remembering Allah (SWTA)" [Muslim]

With that said, you can still fast the 14th and 15th, which are this Saturday the 20th and Sunday the 21st. I ask Allah(swt) to reward you, Ameen :)

Jareer ibn ‘Abdullaah (rAa) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “
Fasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime, and ayaam al-beed are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth." [Al-Nasaa'i; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheel al-Targheeb]

Fasting Six Days of the Month of Shawwal

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said:
"Whosoever fasted in Ramadan and then followed up with six fasting days of Shawwal, it is like fasting every day." [related by Muslim]

Ten Useless Matters

There are ten useless matters:

  1. Knowledge that is not acted on
  2. The deed that has neither sincerity nor is based on following the righteous examples of others
  3. Money that is hoarded, as the owner neither enjoys it during this life nor obtains any reward for it in the Hereafter
  4. The heart that is empty of love and longing for Allah, and of seeking closeness to Him
  5. A body that does not obey and serve Allah
  6. Loving Allah without following His orders or seeking His pleasure
  7. Time that is not spent in expiating sins or seizing opportunities to do good
  8. A mind that thinks about useless matters
  9. Serving those who do not bring you close to Allah, nor benefit you in your life
  10. Hoping and fearing whoever is under the authority of Allah and in His hand; while he cannot bring any benefit or harm to himself, nor death, nor life; nor can he resurrect himself.
However the greater of these matters are wasting the heart and wasting time. Wasting the heart is done by preferring this worldly life over the Hereafter, and wasting time is done by having incessant hope. Destruction occurs by following one’s desires and having incessant hope, while all goodness is found in following the right path and preparing oneself to meet Allah.

How strange it is that when a servant of Allah has a [worldly] problem, he seeks help of Allah, but he never asks Allah to cure his heart before it dies of ignorance, neglect, fulfilling one’s desires and being involved in innovations. Indeed, when the heart dies, he will never feel the significance or impact of his sins.

The Fiqh Ruling on Jum'ah Salat, if Eid occurs on a Friday

Muslim jurists differed on this issue and have four opinions:

The first opinion: Jumu'ah salat is still obligatory and has to be performed on time, whether one performs Eid salat or not. And this applies for both the Imam and the congregation.

This is the position of the Hanafi, Maliki and Dhahiri schools. Ibn Qudamah in his book al-Mughni attributed this opinion to the majority of the Fuqhaa' and Muslim Jurists.

Their evidence, according to Ibn Rushd in "Bidayatul Mujtahid" is the default ruling of Jumu'ah salat as was derived from the ayah in surat al-Jumu'ah:

"O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): That is best for you if ye but knew..." 62:9

The binding ruling of Jumu'ah salat was also clearly established by the many ahadith in Bukhari, Muslim and other collections of hadith, and this cannot be out ruled even if Eid falls on Friday.

Jumu'ah salat is also as obligatory as Eid salat, and performing one of them does not substitute for the other. Imam Ibn Hazam rahimahullah in his book al-Muhallaa said: "And if Eid and Falls on Friday, one should pray Eid first and then Jumu'ah. This is a must, and there is no reliable evidence to prove otherwise". He then said: "Jumu'ah is Fard and Eid is supererogatory, and the supererogatory act does not override the Fard."

Moreover, the scenario of Eid and Jumu'ah is similar to Eid and Dhuhr salat in any other day besides Friday. Therefore, if dhuhr is required on Eid day, then Jumu'ah which is the Fard of Friday is also required and remains obligatory.

The second opinion: Jumu'ah is still obligatory on the residents of towns and cities and those who live near (a reasonable distance) from the Masjid. As for the commuters and people who reside far from the Masjid, they are then, if attended Eid salat, exempt from coming back for Jumu'ah salat. The Imam, however, is still obligated to perform Jumu'ah.

This is the opinion of Imam ash-Shafi' ee rahimahullah, and Imam an-Nawawi in his Majmou' attributed it to the majority of Muslim scholars.

His evidence is the narration of Abi Ubaid, as reported in Muwatta' Imam Malik, who said: I prayed Eid salat with Uthman ibn Affan one time. He first started with salat, and then delivered the khutbah in which he said: "This day you have two Eids coming in one day, so for the people who came form al-Awaali -the suburbs and outskirts of Madinah- whoever wishes to stay for Jumu'ah, let them stay. And whoever wishes to return home, they can leave. They have my permission." Imam an-Nawawi rahimahullah attributed it to Bukhari, and it is indeed in Bukhari in the "Book of al-Adhaahi" or qurbani's and sacrifices, chapter 16/ What is permissible to consume from the adhaahi and what is permissible to keep?, and hadith number is 5572. (Fathul Bari's copy)

Imam ash-Shirazi rahimahullah said: "and the people are excused from attending Jumu'ah salat in general due to extreme hardship, and requiring people (of the suburbs) to return back for Jumu'ah after they have attended Eid salat would inflict a great hardship on them."

The third opinion: Whoever attends Eid salat is pardoned from attending Jumu'ah regardless of his place of residence, for both the Imam and the congregation. The Imam however, should still offer Jumu'ah for those who wish to attend it and perform it for those who missed Eid salat.

Dhuhr salat, in this case, should still be performed in place of Jumu'ah. This opinion, due to its clear textual evidences, is the strongest opinion of all.

It is the opinion of Imam Ahamd rahimahullah, and is the preference of shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah who attributed it to a group of the companions such as Omar, Uthman, Ibn Masoud, Ibn Abbas and others, and then said: "and there is no knowledge of any disagreement among them on this." It is also the opinion of many of the scholars of hadith.

The evidence for this is hadith Zaid ibn Arqam who said: The Prophet prayed the Eid salat on a Friday and granted a permission regarding the praying of Jumu'ah salat and said: "If anyone wants to pray it, he may pray." Reported by Imam Ahmad and in the books of Sunan except for at-Tirmidhi. And was ruled Sahih by Ibn Khuzayma.

In the Sunan of Abu Dawood, Abu Hurayrah narrated, the Messenger of Allah said: "In this day you have two Eids, and for whomever wishes (Eid salat) will suffice him (form attending Jumu'ah) and we shall still be prying Jumu'ah."

Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah adds: "Moreover, if someone attends Eid salat, he had already obtained the objective of the congregation (on Friday), so he prays Dhuhr if he did not attend Jumu'ah salat, dhuhr salat will remain on time and Eid salat achieves for him the purpose of Jumu'ah congregation. Keeping the obligation of Jumu'ah (binding)on people will definitely cause hardship for them, and would ruin the purpose of Eid, and the reason it was prescribed for to show joy and happiness. Hence, if people were held back from enjoying their time ( in order to attend Jumu'ah salat) Eid will cause an adverse result and negates its purpose."

The fourth opinion: Whoever attends Eid salat is pardoned and does not have to attend any salat after that until Asr salat, i.e. both Jumu'ah and Dhuhr will no longer be required.

This is the opinion of Ata' ibn Abi Rabah and from the companions Ibn az-Zubair. It was also reported as one opinion of Imam Ahmad.

Abdullah ibn az-Zubair radiyallahu anahu once said: "Two Eids (Eid Day and Friday)came on one Day, so he prayed two Rak'ah early in the morning and did not add anything to after that until Asr." Ata' reported this to Ibn Abbas when he was in Taif, and to this he replied: "The followed the Sunnah" Reported by Abu Dawood.

In refuting this final opinion, Imam al-Khattabi rahimahullah said: "This -the act of Ibn az-Zubair- could not be understood except in the context of the opinion of those who permit performing Jumu'ah prior to the time of zawal (the beginning of the time of dhuhr when the sun starts moving out of the zenith), hence Ibn az-Zubair would have prayed Jumu'ah in place of Eid and dhuhr."

In addition to that, Ata' who reported the incident of ibn az-Zubair also said: "On Jumu'ah time we gathered for salat but he (Ibn az-Zubair) did not come out (to lead us)so we prayed individually." This means that they prayed dhuhr, and there is a possibility that Ibn az-Zubair did pray dhuhr in his house as well.

And Allah knows best.

Easy Actions For Which Rewards Are Multiplied

How great will be the regret of those who waste the opportunity!

1. Preserving the ties of kinship: " Whoever wishes that his provision be increased and his age lengthened, let him maintain the ties of kinship." [al-Bukhari and Muslim]

2. Performing many prayers in the two noble Harams (in Makkah and Madinah): "Prayer in this masjid of mine is superior to a thousand prayers elsewhere, except for Masjid al-Haram, and prayer in Masjid al-Haram is superior to one hundred thousand prayers elsewhere." [Ahmad and ibn Majah]

3. Performing prayers in congregation. "Prayer in congregation is superior to praying individually twenty-seven times." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

4. Praying `Isha and Fajr in congregation: "He who prays Isha' in Jama'ah [congregation] is as if he has prayed for half the night. As to him who (also) prays Fajr in congregation, it is as if he has prayed all night." [narrated by Malik and the wording is that of Muslim who also reported it]

5. Performing voluntary prayers at home. "Superiority of a man's prayer in his home over his prayer when people see him is like the superiority of an obligatory prayer over a voluntary one." [al-Bayhaqi, classed as Saheeh by al-Albani] "The most superior prayer of a person is in his home, except for obligatory prayers." [al-Bukhari and Muslim]

6. Observing some manners of the day of Jumu`ah. "Whoever ghassala (washes his head, and it is said: has intercourse with his wife so that it be a means to lower the gaze from the haram that day) on the day of Jumuah, then comes in the earliest time and before the first khutbah, walks and doesn't ride, stays near the Imam, listens and does not speak - for each step [he makes] he has actions of one year, the reward of fasting and standing in prayer in it." [Ahl as-Sunan]

7. Salat ul-Ishraq. "Whoever prays al-ghadaa (i.e. al fajr) in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until sunrise, then prays two units of prayer, has a complete reward of Hajj and `Umrah [The Prophet, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, repeated 'complete' three times for emphasizing]." [at-Tirmidhi, classed as Saheeh by al-Albani]

8. Attending lectures in the mosque. "Whoever goes to the mosque not desiring except to learn or teach what is good has the reward of a pilgrim who completed his Hajj." [at-Tabarani, classed as Saheeh by Al-Albani]

9. Performing `Umrah in the month of Ramadhan. "`Umrah in Ramadhan is equal to a Hajj with me." [al-Bukhari]

10. Performing obligatory prayers in the Mosque. "Whoever leaves his home in a state of purity to perform obligatory prayer, his reward is like that of a pilgrim (while) in the state of ihram [i.e. he receives reward similar to that of spending time in ihram during Hajj]." [Abu Dawud, classed as Saheeh by Al-Albani] So one should be in a state of purity when leaving one's home, rather than the place for ablution within the mosque, except due to necessity.

11. Being from the people of the first row in congregational prayers. `Irbad bin Saariyah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, used to seek forgiveness for [the people of] the first row three times, and for [the people of the] second row once." [an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah]. "Allah and His Angels make salawat upon [the people of] the first row." [Ahmad, with a good isnad]

12. Prayer in Masjid Qubaa' in Madinah: "Whoever purifies himself in his house then comes to Masjid Qubaa' and prays in it has the reward like that of `Umrah." [an-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah]

13. Saying what the caller to prayer says: "Say as they say [i.e. callers to prayer], and when you finish, ask and you will be given." [Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i] That is, supplicate when you finish repeating after the caller to prayer.

14. Fasting Ramadhan and following it with six days of Shawwal. "Whoever fasts Ramadhan, then follows it with six (days) of Shawwal, it is like fasting all the time." [Muslim]

15. Fasting three days each month. "Whoever fasts three days each month, it s like fasting all the time." [at-Tirmidhi]. This is supported by the verse, "Whoever comes with a good deed for him is a tenfold [reward]." One day being equal to ten days.

16. Providing food for breaking of the fast: "Whoever provides food for breaking of the fast of a fasting person receives the reward of the fasting person, without the reward of the fasting person being reduced in any way." [at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah]

17. Standing in prayer on Laylatul-Qadr. "Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months" [Qur'an 97:3], that is, superior to approximately 83 years of worship.

18. Jihad. "Standing of a man in a row (saff) in the way of Allah is superior to 60 years of worship." [al-Hakim, classed as Saheeh by al-Albani] This is the superiority of standing in a row, so what about one who fights in the way of Allah for days, or months, or years?

19. Ribaat. "Whoever takes a post (at borders of Muslim lands, where an enemy may be expected) for a day and night in the way of Allah has the reward of fasting and standing in prayer for a month, and whoever dies in such a state receives a continuous reward similar to it, and is [also] rewarded with provision and saved from al-Fattaan." [Related by Muslim] Al-Fattaan is punishment of the grave.

20. Righteous actions in the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. "There are no days in which righteous deeds are dearer to Allah than these ten [days of Dhul Hijjah]." They said, "O Messenger, even jihad in the way of Allah?" He said, "Not even jihad in the way of Allah, except for the man who leaves with his wealth, and does not return with any of it (life or wealth)." [al-Bukhari]

21. Frequent recitation of Qur'anic soorahs. "Qul Huwa'Llahu Ahad" is equal to a third of the Qur'an and "Qul yaa ayyuha'l Kaafiroon" is equal to a fourth of the Qur'an." [at-Tabarani, classed as Saheeh by Al-Albani]

22. Al-Istighfaar. "Whoever seeks forgiveness for believing men and believing women, Allah will write for him a good deed for each believing man ad believing woman." [at-Tabarani, classed as Hasan by Al-Albani]

23. Fulfilling people's needs. "That I walk with my Muslim brother in [fulfilling his] need is dearer to me than being in i`tikaf in the masjid for a month." [Ibn Abi Dunya, classed as Hasan by al-Albani]

24. Dhikr. That I say 'Subhaan Allah, wal-Hamdu li'Llah, wa laa ilaaha ill Allahu wa'Llahu Akbar' is dearer to me than what the sun has risen upon." [Muslim]

"Whoever enters a market and says: 'Laa ilaaha ill Allah waHdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul mulku wa lahul Hamdu yuHyi wa yumeetu wa huwa Hayyun laa yamoot, bi yadihil khayr, wahuwa `alaa kulli shay'in qadeer' [there is nothing worthy of worship but Allah, He is alone without partner, to Him belongs dominion and praise, he causes life and death and He is the Living and does not die. In His Hand is all the good, and He is over all things competent.] Allah will write for him a million good deeds, erase a million of his bad deeds and raise him a million levels."[at-Tirmidhi, classed as Hasan by al-Albani] There are many other words of rememberance which are rewarded abundandtly, as is well known.

"There are two blessings which many people lose: good health and free time." [al-Bukhari]

Break your Fast with Dates

It has been narrated by Anas (radiallaahu 'anhu), who said, "The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) used to break his Sawm (fasting) before performing Maghrib prayer with three fresh date-fruits; if there were no fresh date-fruits, he would eat three dry dates; and if there were no dry date-fruits; he would take three draughts of water." [At-Tirmidhi]

Feed a Fasting Person

The Prophet(PBUH) said: "Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like that of the fasting person, without any reduction in his reward." [At-Tirmidhi, authenticated by Al-Albaani (rahimahullaah).]

Heart Wheel Journal

Muhammad Alshareef has created a program called the "HeartWheel Journal". The HeartWheel Journal allows you to focus on eight slices of your heart, extracted from the Qur’an and Sunnah. It's a 30-Day program, so it's perfect for maximizing Ramadan.

You can download it here or you can purchase a printed copy here.

Ramadan Kareem :)

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari).

"Believe in Allah and His apostle, and spend (in charity) out of the (substance) whereof He has made you heirs. For, those of you who believe and spend (in charity),- for them is a great Reward." [Surat Al-Hadid (7), Ayah #7]

"But teach (thy Message) for teaching benefits the Believers." [Surat Az-Zariyat (51), Ayah #55]
May Allah(swt) accept our fasting, accept our tears, forgive our sins, and extend our years. May this blessed month be a source of mercy, guidance, unity, and peace that permeates throughout the world. I ask Allah(swt) to purify us during this blessed month, increase our Imaan and Taqwa, and accept from us our prayers and good deeds. May Allah(swt) make it a month of happiness for you, your family, and your community.
Ameen :)

Beautiful do’a for Ramadan

By Mohamad Joban

O ALLAH, on this month, take us closer towards Your pleasure, keep us way from Your anger and punishment, grant us the opportunity to recite Your verses (of the Qur'an), by Your mercy, O the most Merciful.

O ALLAH, grant us wisdom and awareness, keep us away from foolishness and pretension, grant us a share in every blessing You send down, by You generosity, O the most Generous.

O ALLAH, place us among those who seek forgiveness. Place us among Your righteous and obedient servants, and place us among Your close awliyaa, by Your kindness, O the most Merciful.

O ALLAH, let us have mercy on the orphans, and feed [the hungry], and spread peace, and keep company with the noble-minded, O the shelter of the hopeful.

O ALLAH, make us, among those who rely on You, from those who You consider successful, and place us among those who are near to you, by Your favor, O goal of the seekers.

O ALLAH, beautify us with covering and chastity, cover us with the clothes of contentment and chastity, let us adhere to justice and fairness, and keep us safe from all that We fear, by Your protection, O the protector of the frightened.

O ALLAH, purify us from un-cleanliness and dirt, make us patient over events that are decreed, grant us the ability to be pious, and keep company with the good, by Your help, O the beloved of the destitute.

O ALLAH, grant us compatibility with the good, keep us away from patching up with the evil, lead us in it, by Your mercy, to the permanent abode, by Your God ship, O the God of the worlds.

O ALLAH, multiply for us its blessings, and ease our path towards its bounties, do not deprive us of the acceptance of its good deeds, O the Guide towards the clear truth.

O ALLAH, we ask You for what pleases You, and We seek refuge in You from what displeases You, We ask You to grant us the opportunity to obey You and not disobey You, O One who is generous with those who ask.

O ALLAH, bestow on us the blessings of Laylatul Qadr, change our affairs from (being) difficult to (being) easy, accept our apologies, and decrease for us [our] sins and burdens, O the Compassionate with His righteous servants.

Dua is suspended between heaven and earth and none of it is taken up until you send blessings upon your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).” (Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi).

Payers and best Blessings upon our beloved Mohammed SAW his noble family RA andal of his companion RA...amin.

O ALLAH, grant us a share in its nawafil (recommended prayers), honor us by attending to our difficulties, make closer the means to approach You, from all the means, O One who is not preoccupied by the requests of the beseechers.

O ALLAH, on this blessed month, cover us with Your mercy, grant us in it success and protection, purify our hearts from the darkness of false accusations, O the Merciful to His believing servants.
